Modern Bay Leaf Kitchen
Location: Cashmere, QLD
Style: Modern
Design Goals
For Karen's kitchen renovation in Cashmere, the goal was to create a bigger, more user-friendly kitchen with extra storage, easier access and a beautiful new space the family could enjoy together. Karen's mum had moved in with them, so it was important that the kitchen felt practical for everyday use while still giving the home a fresh, modern update.
The existing kitchen layout worked with the home, but the family wanted to make better use of the space. Because the tiles ran throughout the house and the floors were not being replaced, we kept the kitchen in the same footprint. From there, the focus was on improving the storage, extending the island and making the kitchen feel more open and functional.

Karen Fell In Love With Our Showroom Bay Leaf Kitchen
Karen came into the MKN Kitchen showroom without a fixed design already chosen. During the showroom tour, she fell in love with our bay leaf kitchen display, and that became the starting point for the design.
Rather than using the green across the whole kitchen, we kept it as a feature on the island. This gave the kitchen a lovely focal point while keeping the rest of the palette light, fresh and easy to live with.
The overall style is modern, with a soft feature element through the bay leaf scalloped island panel.
Creating An Island As The Family Hub
One of the main changes was extending the island and making it 1200mm wide. This gave the family room for seating, extra bench space and a bar fridge, turning the island into more of a family hub.
Because the family loves to cook and has a lot of people living in the home, the island became a really important part of the design. It gives people somewhere to sit while others are cooking, and it helps the kitchen feel more social and open.
Storage And Accessibility
Storage and accessibility were big parts of the design.
We used more drawers rather than cupboards, which makes it easier to pull everything out and access items without having to reach into the back of a cabinet. This was also helpful for Karen's mum, as the drawers made the kitchen more user-friendly day to day.
We also included pull-outs either side of the cooktop for herbs, spices, oils and sauces, so everything needed for cooking could be kept close and easy to reach.
Bay Leaf Green Scalloped Feature
We knew from the start that the bay leaf scalloped panel was going to be the real hero of this kitchen.
Karen loved the bay leaf green from the showroom, but she wanted it to be a feature rather than the main colour throughout the kitchen. The scalloped island panel was a great way to bring that colour in with texture and interest.
LED lighting was added underneath the island, which highlights the scalloped detail beautifully. From the lounge area, you can see the lighting under the island, the bar fridge and the LED strip lighting under the overhead cabinetry, so it creates a really nice feature when you're sitting back in the living space.
A Kitchen For The Whole Family
This kitchen stayed within the original footprint, but it now feels much more usable, modern and suited to the family.
The island gives the kitchen a stronger focal point, the drawers and pull-outs make storage easier to access, and the bay leaf scalloped panel adds a really beautiful feature without overpowering the space.
Tracey's favourite part of the finished kitchen was the scalloped bay leaf island panel, especially with the LED lighting shining across it. It gave the kitchen that little point of difference while still keeping the whole design balanced and practical.
