Can You Combine a Laundry and Butler’s Pantry?
Yes, you definitely can combine a laundry and butler’s pantry, and it is something we do fairly often.
Whether it is going to work well really comes down to the space, how you want to use both areas and how easily the laundry can be accessed from the kitchen.
If the laundry is directly behind or beside the kitchen, sometimes creating a combined laundry and butler’s pantry can make really good use of an area that would otherwise just be used for washing clothes.
Think About What You Actually Want From the Butler's Pantry
These days, most people aren't necessarily using a butler's pantry as a second full kitchen.
Quite often it is more like a walk-in pantry with open shelving for pantry items and a section of benchtop where you can keep your larger small appliances. Things like the coffee machine, Thermomix, air fryer, toaster or other appliances that you use regularly can stay out there rather than being spread all over the main kitchen.
If you've already got a laundry directly behind the kitchen, sometimes we can incorporate that additional pantry storage and small appliance space into the laundry rather than taking more space away from the living area to create a completely separate butler's pantry.
Access Is a Big Consideration
One of the first things we would look at is how you actually get into the laundry.
If it is already easily accessible from the kitchen, combining the two spaces can be quite straightforward. If it isn't, we might look at whether creating a doorway between the kitchen and laundry would improve the way both areas work.
But putting in a new doorway isn't always automatically the best option.
You have to look at whether that doorway is going to help or hinder the layout of both rooms. Sometimes putting a doorway in means losing a section of cabinetry or having to move plumbing, water or waste. If we have to start chasing services through the floor just to create that access, sometimes the cost versus reward isn't there.
Other times, it can work really easily and actually improve both spaces.
The Laundry Still Needs To Work as a Laundry
The important thing is that we don't turn the laundry into a pantry and then make the laundry difficult to use.
You still need enough room for your washing machine and dryer, laundry sink, storage and whatever else you use that space for. Then we can look at where pantry shelving, cabinetry or a small appliance bench could fit around that.
Because our cabinetry is custom made, we can design the space around exactly what needs to go in there rather than trying to make standard cabinet sizes fit.
The best combined laundry and butler's pantry is one where both functions make sense. You should still be able to walk in and use it comfortably as a laundry, while also having that extra pantry storage and somewhere to keep the appliances and clutter that you don't necessarily want sitting in the main kitchen.
If combining the two spaces improves the layout and gives you more usable storage, it can be a really practical option. If creating it means compromising both rooms or introducing a lot of unnecessary building and plumbing work, we would normally look at another solution.
