Should Your Kitchen Style Match the Rest of Your Home?

When we’re designing a kitchen, we would normally look at the style of the whole house, not just the kitchen by itself.

Someone might absolutely love a really cool-toned coastal kitchen, but if they have really warm-toned floors, warm-toned window surrounds and more of a Mediterranean-style house, it’s obviously not going to match.

So we would normally take it back to what’s already in the home and work from there.

Should Your Kitchen Style Match the Rest of Your Home

Flooring Is a Big One

Flooring makes a big difference because most of the time it is either staying there or the customer already knows what they are changing it to.

That will usually help guide whether we are going towards more of a cool colour palette or a warm colour palette.

You can have lots of different colours and textures throughout the house, but if you keep that overall warm or cool tone fairly consistent, it tends to make everything look more cohesive.

If you start putting a really cool-toned kitchen into a very warm-toned house, quite often it can look like it just doesn’t belong with the rest of the space.

Inspiration Images Are Really Helpful

If somebody comes in with inspiration photos, we would normally have a look through those and see what sort of style keeps coming up.

Even if the customer can’t put a label on what they like, you can normally start seeing a bit of a pattern.

We would look at things like whether the doors are flat or routed, what sort of handles they like, whether the kitchen is handleless, what sort of sink is being used and what sort of benchtop they keep choosing.

You might look through the photos and go, okay, most of these are cool toned, there are lots of wood grains, blues and greens, so maybe they are leaning towards more of a coastal kitchen.

Then we can talk through what that style would look like in their actual home.

You Don’t Have To Copy the Inspiration Photo

One thing people sometimes miss is how that kitchen is going to look in their own house.

They might find this amazing kitchen on Pinterest with a massive island, heaps of natural light and big open windows, but then their own kitchen is a much smaller space.

Or they might love this really fresh white kitchen, but they have terracotta floor tiles.

That doesn’t mean we would say they can’t have a white kitchen.

We might still go with white, but choose a white with a warmer undertone so that it ties back into the flooring and the rest of the house.

It’s more about adjusting it slightly so that it still gives them the look they want, but it actually works in their space.

The Kitchen Doesn’t Have To Fit Into One Exact Style

We don’t really try to categorise customers and say, “You have this type of house, so you have to have this type of kitchen.”

Because we’re custom, we can really build it around what the customer likes.

We would guide them if they were choosing things that don’t normally sit together.

For example, somebody might want a Hamptons-style routed door but then also want a completely handleless kitchen. Handleless generally leans more towards a modern look, whereas a Hamptons door leans more towards country or coastal.

We would normally show them what those different options are going to look like and help them visualise it.

At the end of the day, if that is what they really want, that’s what we can give them.

But we would always have that conversation first so that when the kitchen is finished, it feels like it actually belongs with the rest of the home.
