Flat Pack vs Custom Kitchen
Flat pack kitchens are usually cheaper upfront, but custom kitchens are generally the better option if you want a kitchen that fits your space properly, uses better materials and takes a lot of the guesswork out of the process. With a flat pack kitchen, you are working with standard modular sizes, your own measurements and whatever issues your walls or floor throw at you. A custom kitchen is designed to suit your home, your layout and the way you actually use the space, which is why the differences go well beyond price alone.

The main issue with flat pack kitchens
Obviously, one of the biggest things is having to build it yourself. Even if you are not physically putting it together on your own, you still need somebody to build and install it for you and in a lot of cases there'll be some level of customisation.
The other big issue is taking your own measurements.
With a flat pack kitchen, you may find that your walls are out of square, so things do not fit properly. You may also find that your measurements are wrong, which means things do not fit properly again.
That is one of the big differences with a custom kitchen. By having a project manager come out and do a check measure, we are building the kitchen to suit the shape of your house and the shape of your space. So you know everything is going to fit properly.
Custom kitchens are built to suit your home
With a custom kitchen, whatever size you need that cabinet to be is what we are going to build for you. That is very different to a flat pack kitchen, where everything is based on modular sizing. You can select from certain options, but everything comes in a set size.
That is fine in some situations, but real homes are not always perfectly square or perfectly standard. So when you are working with a custom kitchen, you have a lot more flexibility to make everything fit the space properly.
Material quality is different too
Another difference is the quality of the materials. With flat pack kitchens they're often designed to suit a budget market, so more often than not they're not using the same quality of materials as we do. The carcass material is different, and the back of the cabinet is very different as well.
That is something people do not always think about straight away, because from the outside a kitchen might look fine. But once you get into how it is actually made and what materials are being used, there can be quite a big difference. This difference definitely can affect the lifetime cost of the kitchen when you consider it from a cost per day perspective.
Why custom can make the whole process easier
A custom kitchen takes a lot of the guesswork out. Instead of trying to work out whether your measurements are right, whether the cabinets will fit, or whether you are going to run into issues because the walls are not square, you have somebody come out, check everything properly, and build it to suit your home.
That is usually the biggest advantage. You are not trying to make standard-sized products fit a space they were not really designed for.
So which one is better?
It really depends on what is important to you. If you want something that is built to suit the exact shape of your house and your space, a custom kitchen is the better option.
If you go with a flat pack kitchen, the main things to be aware of are:
- building it yourself, or paying someone to build it
- the risk of incorrect measurements
- walls being out of square
- modular sizes not fitting the space properly
- differences in material quality
So while flat pack kitchens can work for some people, a custom kitchen is usually going to give you a better fit, better finish and a smoother result overall.
