How to Combine Your Laundry and Kitchen in Small Homes
Small Home Renovation Combine Your Laundry & Kitchen
In small homes, every square metre counts. When space is tight, combining your laundry and kitchen can be a game-changer, improving functionality without compromising on style. At Modern Kitchens Northside, we've helped many Brisbane homeowners reimagine their tight spaces, and Katie & Chris' recent renovation in Murrumba Downs is the perfect example of how clever design can make a big difference.
Katie & Chris' Kitchen-Laundry Transformation
Katie and Chris faced a common challenge: a small kitchen and an even smaller laundry, separated by a wall that made both areas feel cramped and inefficient. Their existing laundry had a sliding glass door, but the layout left little room for movement or storage.
To create a more open and functional space, our kitchen design team removed the dividing wall and reworked the footprint into one continuous area. This allowed us to incorporate the laundry into the kitchen seamlessly, making it feel like one cohesive room instead of two disconnected ones.
A timber roller door was added in front of the washer and dryer to discreetly conceal them when not in use. This not only improved aesthetics but also made the space more flexible. With the added room, we were able to include an additional sink and create a stylish nook that serves as a coffee station, almost like a mini butler's pantry.
"Instead of two small, impractical spaces, Katie and Chris now have one beautifully integrated area that functions like a dream," says MKN Designer Megan.
Why Combine Your Kitchen and Laundry in a Small Home?
Here are a few benefits of combining your laundry and kitchen to maximise your space and layout in a small home:
- Maximise usable space: Especially in smaller homes, this approach avoids the need for two separate utility zones.
- Create a unified look: Using consistent cabinetry, benchtops, and finishes helps the space feel intentional and elegant.
- Simplify your layout: Having plumbing and power in the same area can reduce installation costs and simplify design choices.
- Add functionality: With clever cabinetry, pull-out hampers, or even a coffee station, you can make your laundry area work harder without taking up extra space.
Smart Design Tips
- Use cabinetry to conceal appliances like washing machines or dryers. Roller doors, pocket doors or bi-folds are all great options.
- Opt for custom joinery to make the most of every centimetre which means you are not restricted by standard sizing.
- Include multi-purpose zones, like a coffee station or utility sink, to increase functionality without cluttering the space.
- Keep visual continuity with matching finishes across both areas.
