Signs It’s Time to Renovate Your Kitchen
A lot of people redo their kitchen because they want it to look fresh and new, and they want to change the colours and surfaces. That is a really common reason. But there are also practical signs that a kitchen is getting to the point where it probably does need replacing.
Sometimes it is obvious. Sometimes it is just a whole lot of little things starting to go wrong at once.

Worn benchtops are usually one of the first signs
One of the main ones is wear on the benchtop. A lot of people will have wearing on their laminate benchtop, so you start to see where the colour is coming off and it is getting worn. The surface can even change. You might have had a stippled finish and all of a sudden it is smooth, just because it has worn away over time. That is usually a pretty clear sign the kitchen has had a lot of use.
When the cabinets start failing
Then you get failing carcasses. Things start falling apart. Shelves do not fit anymore. Hinges break. Drawer runners do not run smoothly anymore. Sometimes the laminate or vinyl is peeling as well, and once that starts happening the kitchen can look really tired really quickly.
It is usually not just one dramatic thing. It is more that everything is starting to feel a bit past it.
That is often when people get to the point where they stop thinking about little fixes and start thinking, no, we probably just need to redo the kitchen properly.
Sometimes it is not broken, people just want to update it
Sometimes it is not even that the kitchen is completely falling apart. A lot of people just want to update it. They want it to look fresher, they want to change the colours, they want new surfaces, and they want it to suit the rest of the house a bit better.
We do a lot of both. We do people who have just bought a house and want to redo the kitchen straight away, but probably more often it is people who have been living there a while and have been thinking about it for a while.
That is usually how it goes. They have lived with the kitchen long enough to know all the things that annoy them.
When the layout no longer works
It might be that the storage is not working properly. It might be that they are over cupboards and want more drawers because they are easier to use and you can fit more into them. It might be that the layout feels dated and they want to open it up.
We quite often pull out older U shape and G shape kitchens because people are wanting an island instead, or more of an L shape with an island. The old kitchen might still be there and technically functioning, but it is not really working for how they want to live now.
And that is the other big one. Sometimes it is not wear and tear, it is just that the kitchen no longer works for them.
When it is worth having the conversation
If somebody is looking at their kitchen and the benchtop is worn, the shelves are failing, the laminate is peeling, the hinges are breaking, the drawers are annoying to use, and the whole thing feels dated, that is usually the point where it is worth having the conversation.
Because once a kitchen starts doing all of those things at once, it is not going to get better by itself.
