More drawers, less bending into cupboards

One of the biggest things we talk about with customers is using more drawers instead of cupboards. People do tend to fixate on cupboards because that is what they are used to, but drawers are just so much easier to use. You can fit about 30% more in a drawer than you can in a cupboard, because in a cupboard you have to leave air space so you can get your hand in there and grab things. With a drawer, when you pull it out, you are creating that space, so you can stack things a lot more efficiently.

They are also easier on the body. You are not squatting down and reaching into the back of a cupboard trying to pull things out. You are just pulling the drawer out, bending down, grabbing what you need and putting it straight on the bench. It is one of those things that sounds simple, but it makes a huge difference to how the kitchen feels to use.

Pantry storage that is actually usable

Pantries can look quite big on paper, but that does not always mean they are easy to use. A lot of the time, better pantry storage comes down to making things accessible. Inner pantry drawers are a really good example of that. Instead of having to reach right up the back of a shelf, you can pull the drawer out and get to things properly.

We also do little oil and bottle pull-outs near the cooktop for herbs, spices, oils and sauces. That sort of thing is great because it puts the items where you actually use them, rather than having them floating around in different cupboards. Sometimes it is those smaller storage decisions that make the kitchen feel much more organised.

Do not waste the corners

Corners are one of those spots that can either work really hard or be a complete pain. If you just leave them as a standard cupboard, they can become dead space pretty quickly. That is where corner storage mechanisms can make a big difference. Things like a lazy Susan, a magic corner or a blind corner pull-out can make that space much easier to access.

Particularly in a smaller kitchen, you want every part of the kitchen to earn its keep. If you have got awkward corners and you are not using them properly, that is storage you are basically throwing away.

A place for all the small appliances

These days everyone has a lot of small appliances. Coffee machine, toaster, kettle, air fryer, SodaStream, all of that kind of thing. If all of it is sitting on the main benchtop, the kitchen starts to feel cluttered really quickly. That is why having a small appliance zone can work so well.

That might be an appliance garage, a little coffee station, or a butler's pantry where those items can live out of sight but still be easy to use. We have done projects with bi-fold appliance garages, hidden appliance areas and butler's pantry style spaces that keep the main kitchen much cleaner looking. The main reason people want that is so the feature part of the kitchen does not become the dumping ground for all the everyday bits and pieces.

Built-in bins and everyday practicality

Built-in bins are another one that people sometimes overlook, but once you have them, they are really handy. They keep the bin tucked away, they help the kitchen feel cleaner, and they just make the whole space work better. The same goes for simple storage details that suit everyday use rather than just filling cabinetry for the sake of it.

Good kitchen storage is often the boring practical stuff. It is not always the flashiest feature. It is the things that make cooking dinner easier, make the benches less messy, and mean you are not forever rummaging around trying to find things.

Custom cabinetry makes a big difference

One of the good things about custom cabinetry is that you are not stuck designing around standard flat-pack sizes. We are not limited to 400, 450 or 600 wide modules. If a set of drawers needs to be 521 wide to suit the space properly, then that is what gets built. That means you can waste less space, use less filler, and get more workable storage out of the kitchen.

That is a big difference between custom cabinetry and modular cabinetry. With custom, you can tailor the kitchen properly to the room and to what the customer actually wants to store. If you have tall tumblers you use all the time, for example, the drawers can be made to suit that. It is that level of detail that makes the kitchen feel like it was designed for you, not just dropped into the room.

Small kitchens can still work really well

If you have a small kitchen, that does not mean you cannot get good storage. Usually it just means you need to be a bit smarter with the layout and cabinetry. More drawers, better corner storage, pantry drawers, integrated bins and pull-outs can all help make a smaller kitchen much more usable.

Visually, it can also help to keep things lighter and simpler. Flat doors, minimal lines and less patterning can make a kitchen feel bigger and less busy. In a small space, too many lines and too much detail can make everything feel a bit closed in.

Sometimes people think the only answer is to knock walls down or make the room bigger. Sometimes that is worth doing, but not always. A lot of the time, it is more about getting the storage right and zoning the kitchen properly so the space works better.

It has to suit how you live

That is probably the biggest thing. The best kitchen cabinet and storage ideas are the ones that suit how you live. If you love a really clean looking kitchen, maybe that means hiding the appliances away. If you cook a lot, maybe that means better pantry storage and more drawers near the cooking zone. If you have a small kitchen, maybe it is about making awkward spaces work harder.

There is not one perfect storage solution for every kitchen. It comes down to how you use the space, what is frustrating you in the current kitchen, and what is going to make life easier.
