Should You Move a Window During a Kitchen Renovation?
When we’re looking at changing the layout of a kitchen, windows are definitely one of the things we have to work around.
You might have a window sitting exactly where you would love to put your fridge, your cooking area or a bank of cabinetry. Technically, most things are doable, but moving a window isn’t usually a cheap exercise, so it really comes down to cost versus reward.
We would normally look at what moving that window is actually going to give you.
Is moving it going to completely change the way the kitchen works? Is it going to allow us to create a much better layout, give you the island you’ve always wanted or make significantly better use of the space? If it is going to make a big enough difference and it’s important to you, then we can talk to a builder and see what’s achievable.
On the other hand, if moving the window is going to add quite a bit to the kitchen renovation but only make a small difference to the finished kitchen, we would normally look at whether we can design around it instead.
Sometimes Working Around the Window Makes More Sense
Kitchen renovations are a bit of a problem-solving exercise every time.
We have to work with the shape and size of the room, existing windows and doors, plumbing, flooring and anything else that is already there. Quite often we can change the cabinetry or rethink where different zones of the kitchen are positioned and still create a really functional layout without having to make major structural changes.
The important thing is not to assume that because a window is in an awkward position it automatically needs to move.
We would look at the different options first, show you what can be achieved while keeping it where it is, and then compare that against what moving it would allow us to do.
When Moving the Window Can Be Worth It
There are definitely situations where moving or changing a window can open up the kitchen considerably.
If it allows us to create a completely different layout, improve the way you move through the kitchen or make much better use of the available space, it may be worth bringing a builder into the conversation.
At the end of the day, it's the client's decision. Our job is to show you the pros and cons of the different options so you can decide whether the extra building work is worth it for the result you're going to get.
Sometimes the best kitchen comes from making a big change to the room. Other times, the smarter option is simply designing a better kitchen around what's already there.
